 Space Panic: released by Universal 1980
  • arcade game
  • player had the ability to fall, there was no ability to jump, swing, or bounce
  • gameplay centered on climbing ladders between different floors
  • sometimes credited as the first platform game


Donkey Kong: released by Nintendo in July 1981 [Reference
  • arcade game 
  • single screen Movement /  static playing field
  • extensive jumping between platform
  • first game that allowed players to jump over obstacles and across gaps
  • know to be the first true platform


Congo Bongo AKA

  • developed by Jordan Mechner and released for Apple II
  • represented a great leap forward in the quality of animation seen in video games


Super Mario Bros: Release by Nintendo in 13 September 1985 [Reference1, Reference2]
  • popularized the side-scrolling genre of video games and led to many sequels in the series that built upon the same basic premise
  • became the archetype for many platformers to follow
  • got into 1999 Guinness Book of World Records by selling over 40 million copy
  • IGN had given the game a 9.5 a week before release day
  • Its success as a pack-in led many companies to see platform games as vital to their success, and certainly contributed greatly to popularizing the genre during the 8-bit console generation


Sonic the Hedgehog: release by SEGA in June 1991 [Reference]
  • showcase a new style of design back at the time 
  • has large field that scrolled effortlessly in all directions, uneven terrains, curved hills
  • complex physics system which allows players to rush through its level with well-placed jumps and rolls
  • gave sonic a rebellious personality, ability of super speed 
  • the game become a massive hit 
  • Made to beat Mario
