Toy Into Game - Formal Elements
(Possible) Definition of a Game
“ A game is a system in which players engage in an artificial conflict, defined by rules, that results in a quantifiable outcome” - Zimmerman & Salen
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
None Game, Yet A Play
- Puzzle [Have a goal - you solve it not play it]
- Toys [Absent Of Goal]
- Mitoza
- Dress Up Games [Majority]
- Story [Lack Of Interaction and no resource]
- Those ancient analogue game
What determine a game and not a game is by analyzing the 'game' with formal elements.

My Choice Of 'None Game'
"If no goals are associated with a plaything, it is a toy." - Chris Crawford
Toy - Plastic Bubble
As many as you want. There's no clear cut rules is ever set for playing with it.
Objective: [Goal Not Specific - No Proper Fix Goal ]
Arguably by most 'blow a bubble'. But then, a proper goal should be something that makes a person's ambitious or driven to put in effort or have an aim or desired to accomplish it. How can blowing a bubble for the sake of blowing be considered a goal then?
What is a goal then?
- Something the players aim for
- There is a purpose for its existence
- A target the player will try his or her might to archive
- Squeeze a amount of liquid gooey plastic from the tube
- One end of the straw was then inserted into the liquid gooey plastic
- User would blow into the other end, inflating the plastic into a bubble
- But sometime people could just uses their bare mouth to pop a hole on the surface of bubble after blowing to further enlarge the plastic bubble
- If any holes surfaces as the plastic bubble are blown, the player could have just use their hand to seal back the hole and continue to blow after
- slide fingers down the straw to seal and separate bubble from the straw
- This is the major core problem to this play that makes it a none game
- There's no proper and clear define rules set for the play
- Thus, making this seems as a very weak and mindless play
Why a Game need rules?
- Rules basically govern the player
- Create a desired 'fair' play for participants
- Allows the player to know what they can or can't do during the play
- Clarification of what happen in various situation
- The amount of resources the player can used is unclear
- Resource can be a box of liquid plastic and straws or a tube and a straw
- Time is something used up during the process of blowing but the amount given wasn't restricted [infinite time]
- Amount of Air the player is capable of blowing out
Conflict: [does not create a challenge or restrict player from doing something]
- However, is meaningless to player due to no rules is set to make this as a meaningful threat
- Player can just take as much re-breath as they want
- Others player are not threat to players as well
- required rules and goals
Boundaries:
- absent of boundaries due to the absent of rules and goal
- absent of outcome due to absent of rules
Toy Conversion Idea
- Each Player is given 1 new liquid plastic tube and a straw
- They're only allow to blow the bubble behind the start line
- Keep the sealed plastic bubble [any size] above ground while getting across the lane [like the above - Using the tips of index finger to keep the bubble from touching the floor]
- Player should be given the choice to strategies how they would use their resource in order to win the game
- Like maybe a larger bubble will be easier to keep above ground with a finger, but yet takes up the resources such as time, liquid bubble and energy
- but high risk comes with higher reward because of the goal
- Any bubble drop to the ground or deflated before being place into the basket is forfeited and abandon, player will have to do step 2 again [rules determining effect]
- Minimum size of bubble size [15cm]
- Winning Condition: First to get five inflated bubble into basket
- Winning Condition [If Draw Occur]: squash the bubbles in the basket to see who have more plastic + the amount of liquid plastic = more
- Losing condition: Insufficient liquid plastic in tube / any other players complete first
Game - Plastic Bubble
Players (Number Of Players The Game Support)
- 3 to 4
Objectives (Goals - Race)
- Get 5 inflated bubbles into basket before other players does
Procedure (system /what player can do within the game)
- Mention in Toy portion [all point]
- Starting Actions: Stand behind the starting line
- Progression Of Actions:
- once whistle is signal to start,
- players start squeezing the liquid plastic onto the straw and start blowing
- seal their bubble when done
- brisk walk while using only index finger from the dominant hand to keep the ballon above the ground
- once reached the basket, place the bubble in
- run back behind the 'start' line
- Special Actions:
- winning when draw occur [toy conversion idea point 7]
- Resolving Actions:
- lose and win condition [ toy conversion idea point 6 & 8 ]
Rules (Mechanics)
- Players can't sabotage other players it'll be a disqualification to play [restriction of action]
- Only can blow the bubble back behind of the starting line [restriction of action]
- They're only allowed to move in their own horizontal track and placing their own bubble in their own basket [restriction of action]
- Mention under Toy Conversion Idea [all point]
Resources / Resource Management (finite resource/have choice/decision)
- only one tube of liquid plastic is given to per player
- energy within players
- time is crucial in this game as the fastest win
Conflict (Create challenge/ hinder player from completing goal)
- other players [opponent]
- physical / energy
Boundaries (rules + goal)
- only blow the plastic bubble before the starting line [boundaries for blowing bubble]
- Game take place within the drawn track
Outcome (win/lose)
- Mention In Toy Conversion Idea point 5 to 7
